Heartbreak Befalls Generals in 1-0 Extra Time Loss to Xavier in RRAC Semifinal

TEXARKANA, Texas – A goal in extra time delivered heartbreak for the Louisiana State University of Alexandria men's soccer team in a 1-0 loss to Xavier (La.) in the RRAC Championship semifinal.

"I'm proud of this team for all they have achieved this year," LSUA Head Coach Mackenzie Young said. "I thought we played excellent today, had chances to win the game but it wasn't meant to be. I'm thankful for my seniors and all they have given this program. We will be back stronger next year."

The Gold Nuggets' goal came just 1:18 into the first extra period. Xavier forced a turnover near midfield and quickly moved the ball into the attacking third where Gustavo Oliveira fired a shot low and to the left for the victory.

LSUA and XULA had two shots in the first half, both of the Generals' shots were on goal.

Leo Durtra tested Valeriu Tarlev in the 22nd minute, his shot stopped by the Generals' captain. Justin Kapp had the Generals' first chance in the 29th minute but was repelled by Breno Zanolla. A minute later, Adam Sherwood sent a shot on goal, but Zanolla was there again.

After a scoreless first half, Paul Adler nearly nabbed the game's first goal but a defender kept the ball from crossing the line in the 61st minute. Oliviera sent a shot goalward a minute later, but Tarlev stymied the opportunity.

Javier Moscardo had a pair of shots turned aside by Zanolla in the 72nd and 79th minutes.

Another defensive save, this time from Xavier's Fabricio Reis, kept Pablo Dominguez de León from putting the Generals ahead in the 82nd minute. Less than a minute later, Dominguez de León rang the crossbar with a header for the Generals' final chance in regulation.

Moscardo had LSUA's only shot in extra time, just 45 seconds after the restart.

The Generals finished with 10 shots, six of which were on goal.
