AUSTELL, GA – The Louisiana State University of Alexandria men's soccer team's season came to a close with a 3-0 loss to Milligan University (Tenn.) in the NAIA Championship First Round.
"Overall, mostly disappointed," LSUA Head Coach
Mackenzie Young said. "Particularly with the score line. I think for large parts of the game we played well, we had chance after chance, and it wasn't going to fall our way. We could have been out there for another two hours and still wouldn't get one in the back of the net, on another day they may end up in the back of the net. Credit to Milligan, they were organized and played well today."
The Generals (14-4-1) outshot the Buffs (12-6-2) 17-14. They recorded 11 shots in the second half. Both teams put seven shots on goal.
Adria Alles made seven saves in goal for the Buffs.
Ivan Capurro recorded four for LSUA.
Milligan went up 2-0 in the first half with goals from Youseff Heggy and Emir Basar. Heggy's goal came in the 12
th minute, while Basar scored in the 44
th minute.
"The one thing, when you come to the national level, when you give them easy ones it's always a mountain to climb," Young added. "These games are tough at 0-0, never mind two down at halftime."
Orin Mitchell nearly equalized in the 18
th minute following Heggy's goal. He sent a header goalward but it was tipped over the bar by Alles.
In the 26
th minute, Buitrago was turned away by Alles.
Federico Gilardi and Buitrago had back-to-back chances in the 65
th minute stymied by Alles.
After a stop from Capurro on Marco Lattanzi in the 67
th minute, Buitrago was again denied by Alles. A minute later, Alles made another save to preserve the Buffs' lead.
The dagger came in the 75
th minute. Trotter Jones slipped a shot into the net for a 3-0 Milligan lead.
Buitrago and
Ben McCarron both had a chance on goal in the final 10 minutes and were rebuffed by Alles.
"In terms of the season, I'm not disappointed at all," Young noted. "A lot of first and a lot of things done that weren't planned on at the beginning of the year. I'm proud of the guys and the seniors and everything they've done this year."
