SHREVEPORT, LA – The No. 1 Louisiana State University of Alexandria men's basketball team fell in their regular season finale, 101-96, to Louisiana State University of Shreveport.
The loss snapped a 19-game winning streak for the Generals (25-2, 22-2 RRAC).
Kashie Natt led LSUA with 30 points. He knocked down 11 baskets and went 6-for-7 from the free throw line. Natt recorded 10 rebounds for his 14
th double-double of the season.
Jakemin Abney recorded 21 points and went 9-for-14 from the field.
Jordan Decuir also finished in double digits points with 12. The Generals scored 50 points in the paint, 23 points off turnovers, 15 second chance points, 30 fast break points, and the bench recorded 51 points.
LSUA struggled to find their footing in the first half. The Generals shot just 29.41% from the floor. They held a slim margin for most of the first seven minutes, before the Pilots (18-10, 15-9 RRAC) slipped ahead 13-12 on a four-point play.
The Pilots held their ground, expanding their lead to seven with under five minutes left in the opening period. Despite a flurry of scoring in the final 3:30 of the first from the Generals, the Pilots answered and took a 38-31 lead into halftime.
Scoring exploded in the second half. The Generals scored 65 points, while the Pilots tallied 63. LSUA knocked down 54.55% of their shots in the back half.
Four-and-a-half minutes in the second half, LSUS extended their advantage to double digits, 49-39. The gap widened to 19, 71-56, with 9:42 remaining in the game.
A three from
Keyon Giroir and back-to-back layups from Abney took a chunk from the Pilots' advantage. After a pair of free throws from LSUS,
Jason Perry II sank a three to cut the Generals' deficit to 10, 76-66.
The Pilots converted four free throws following a pair of technical fouls, pushing their lead back to 14, 80-66, with 6:47 left in regulation.
Two free throws from Abney, a pair of layups and a dunk from Natt, followed by a layup from Abney gave the Generals a 10-0 swing and pulled them within one, 80-79, with just over five minutes left.
LSUS responded with a 9-2 run of their own, pulling ahead 89-81. They kept the Generals out of reach, knocking down eight consecutive free throws over the next two minutes.
The Generals now look towards the Red River Athletic Conference tournament, where they enter as the No. 1 seed. The RRAC Tournament begins on Friday, February 28, at the Laborde Earles Coliseum in Alexandria, Louisiana.
