STERLINGTON, La. – The Louisiana State University of Alexandria baseball team (4-7) split its final two games of the Cajun Collision. They fell 7-3 to Georgetown College (2-6), before grabbing a walk-off win over Indiana University Kokomo (2-6), 8-6.
"We competed well in game one," LSUA Head Coach Kody Gautreaux said. "We just couldn't ge the big hit when we needed it. Game two was a very fun contest with both teams playing really well late into the tournament. Kyler [Carson] came in and was able to give us multiple shut out innings so our offense could find a way to score. Luke [Benoit] got a pitch over the heart of the plate in extra innings adn put a great swing on it to seal the deal. Overall, our team is getting better and competing well and we are excited to start conference next week."
GAME ONE | GC 7, LSUA 3
The Generals recorded six hits against the Tigers. A five-run fourth inning for Georgetown (Ky.) pushed them past LSUA, 7-3.
Carter Fabre (0-1) was charged with the loss. He went 3.1 innings and allowed six runs on eight hits. He struck out three and walked just one.
Charlie Guidry and
Zack Benevage pitched two innings of scoreless relief.
Blaise Foote collected two hits and an RBI.
Julien Kliebert recorded one hit and drove in a run.
Landon Langley also picked up an RBI for the Generals.
An RBI single, then an RBI double for the Tigers gave Georgetown a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
In the second, Langley hit a would-be sacrifice fly but it was mishandled.
Zach Mengarelli came in to score on the play. Foote then laced an RBI single, tying the game at 2-2.
A trio of RBI singles in the fourth brought around five runs for Georgetown, putting the Tigers ahead 7-2.
Kliebert's RBI double in the sixth made it 7-3, but the Tigers limited the damage to secure the win.
GAME TWO | LSUA 8, IUK 6
Luke Benoit crushed a two-run walk-off homerun in the bottom of the ninth inning to send the Generals home with an 8-6 win.
Will Vice got the start and threw four innings. He allowed five runs, four earned, on four hits. He struck out five and walked three. Mengarelli finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Foote and Benoit each drove in two.
The Cougars drove across a trio of runs in the opening frame on an RBI double and a single to center.
In the bottom of the first, an error allowed both Langley and Mengarelli to score. Foote then drove in
Zach Mengarelli on a fielder's choice in the third.
An inning later, a bunt from Kliebert scored Cayden McCoullough. Also in the fourth, an infield single from Langley drove in
Shae Thibodeaux. He was followed by an RBI single from Foote for a 6-3 lead.
A solo homerun opened the top of the fifth for IU Kokomo, before a sacrifice fly brought home the inning's second run. An RBI double brought the game back even, 6-6.
In the bottom of the sixth, a leadoff single from Mengarelli set the table for the Generals. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Langley, but the Cougars held and ended the inning without damage.
The Generals threatened again in the eighth, pushing a runner to second, but a strikeout ended the inning without a run scoring.
Despite the Cougars loading the bases in the top of the ninth,
Kyler Carson recorded a backwards K to finish the frame and preserve the 6-6 tie.
Carson (1-0) threw 4.1 innings of scoreless relief. He struck out five hitters and allowed just one hit .
A lead-off walk put
Dezmon Dugas on first in the bottom of the ninth. Benoit then took a pitch over the wall to left center for a walk-off 8-6 victory.
