McQuillan, Decuir Shine as Generals Beat Xavier (La.), 69-63

NEW ORLEANS, LA – EJ McQuillan and Jordan Decuir combined for over 73-percent of the Louisiana State University of Alexandria men's basketball team's offense in their 69-63 win over Xavier University (La.).

"Big time road win," LSUA Head Coach Dimario Jackson said. "No time to relax, we have to get back to work to be ready for Thursday at The Fort!"

McQuillan recorded a team-high 27 points and went 7-for-16 from the field, including a 3-for-7 mark from deep and knocking down 10 free throws. Decuir also went 7-for-16 and knocked down five of his seven attempts from beyond the arc, as well as knocking down five free throws. The Generals (10-6, 7-3 RRAC) knocked down half of their shots from three-point land and were 15-for-18 at the free throw line in the second half.

Bentravin Phillips recorded 27 points for the Gold Rush (9-5, 6-3 RRAC), while Jamal Gibson added 10. Xavier (La.) shot just 35.71 percent in the second half after knocking down 47.83 percent of their chances in the first.

A 6-0 run for the Gold Rush opened the game's scoring and escalated to a 14-7 advantage six minutes in. A pair of jumpers from Decuir and McQuillan, alongside a free throw from TJ James, cut it to just 14-12 two minutes later.

McQuillan knocked down a three less than 120 seconds later, after a bucket from Courtney McCarthy, to give LSUA their first lead of the game, 17-16.

The Generals and Gold Nuggets traded points for the remainder of the half with XULA heading into the locker room leading 30-29.

Five consecutive free throws, two from Decuir and three from McQuillan, followed by a three from McQuillan gave the Generals a nine-point advantage just five minutes into the second stanza.

LSUA reached a 13-point lead thanks to back-to-back treys from                Decuir and McQuillan, 49-36.

The Generals reached a 16-point lead, their largest of the game, with 11:04 left in regulation, 56-40. A 17-5 run from Xavier over the next five-and-a-half minutes narrowed the gap to four with 5:40 left.

McQuillan converted six free throws down the stretch to secure the victory for LSUA.

The Generals are back at The Fort on Thursday, January 15, as they host the University of the Southwest (N.M.) at 7:30 PM.
