ALEXANDRIA, La. – Louisiana State University of Alexandria has named Head Women's Basketball Coach Billy Perkins interim director of athletics while the university conducts a national search for its next athletics director.
Perkins steps into the role following the departure of Tyler Unsicker, who recently accepted the director of athletics position at NCAA Division II Texas A&M International University.
"Billy has earned the trust of our student-athletes, coaches, and campus community through the way he leads with care and a deep commitment to LSUA," said Chancellor Elizabeth Beard, Ph.D. "He understands our athletics programs and brings valuable experience to this role. I am grateful for his willingness to step forward and provide stability and continuity as we begin the search for our next Director of Athletics."
Perkins has served as head coach of the Generals women's basketball program since August 2022. He was named Red River Athletic Conference Coach of the Year after guiding LSUA to a 23-8 record during the 2023-24 season, setting a program record for wins in a single season. The following year, Perkins led the Generals to the NAIA National Tournament for just the second time in program history.
"I am honored and humbled to have been entrusted by Chancellor Beard with the responsibility of leading our department during this interim period," Perkins said. "Our focus will remain on supporting all student-athletes and teams, strengthening our programs, and staying committed to the values that define our department."
Before joining LSUA, Perkins coached at Central Community College in Nebraska, where 10 players earned All-Region 9 honors and five received All-Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference recognition. He was twice named NCCAC Coach of the Year.
Perkins also brings previous athletics administration experience to the interim role. Before entering the collegiate coaching ranks, he coached girls basketball in Texas and spent eight years as athletic director at Childress High School. He earned a bachelor's degree from West Texas A&M University and his master's from Sul Ross State University.
LSUA will conduct a national search for its next director of athletics.
