ALEXANDRIA, LA – The Louisiana State University of Alexandria women's basketball team held off Our Lady of the Lake University, 66-64, in Red River Athletic Conference play.
Justice Young recorded a team-high 14 points, while
Kelly Norris recorded 13. Both
Sydney Person and
Addison Walker added nine. Young finished with a double-double, hauling in 11 rebounds. The Generals (13-12, 12-8 RRAC) recorded 24 points in the paint, 17 points off turnovers, nine second chance points, and the bench chipped in for 25.
Alexandra Westerdijk Martin led the Saints (9-17, 8-12 RRAC) with 22 points, while Shayla Dede recorded 11 and Samantha Fields tallied 10.
The Generals stormed out to a 22-11 lead over the first quarter. The Saints returned the favor in the second, outscoring LSUA 21-10 and head into the halftime break tied at 32-32.
OLLU scored the first eight points of the third quarter for a 40-32 lead.
With 5:41 left in the third, an 8-0 in favor of the Generals flipped the lead to LSUA, 41-40. Person opened the run with a jumper and was followed by a jumper from
Kaitlyn Blake. Walker then added a layup before Young gave the Generals the lead with a bucket in the paint.
The Saints regained the lead and worked it to four, 46-42. After the Generals tied the game again, a layup from Westerdijk Martin gave OLLU a 48-46 lead. A
McKayla Price free throw sent the Generals into the final quarter trailing by one, 48-47.
OLLU worked their lead back to seven with just 4:01 left in regulation. Back-to-back layups from Young and Person, followed by a pair of free throws from Young, made it 62-61 with just 2:33 left to play.
Norris generated a steal at half court and converted the layup to give LSUA a 63-62 lead with 2:02 remaining. A layup from Walker 38 seconds later extended the lead to three, 65-62.
After a jumper from OLLU's Westerdijk Martin cut the Generals' lead to 65-64, Norris knocked down a free throw as LSUA held the line for the win.
The Generals travel to North Texas-Dallas and Southwest (N.M.) next week for their final two games of regular season play.
