HOBBS, NM – The Louisiana State University of Alexandria women's basketball team closed the regular season with an 88-68 win over the University of the Southwest (N.M.).
"I'm proud of the girls and how we bounced back from Thursday's game," LSUA Head Coach Billy Perkins said. "It was a long trip and to pull a win off in Hobbs in always hard. It was a great team win."
Princis Goff recorded a team-high 25 points, leading four Generals (14-13, 13-9 RRAC) with double digits. Goff finished 9-for-12 from the field and was 4-for-6 from beyond the arc.
Sydney Person (17),
Blair Smith (15), and
Addison Walker (12) also recorded 10 or more points.
Reese Stephens and
Kelly Norris both dished out five assists. LSUA recorded 38 points in the paint, 12 points off turnovers, and the bench recorded 31 points. The Generals shot 50-percent from the field as a team.
Karinna Ortiz tallied 31 points for the Mustangs (7-21, 3-19 RRAC). She knocked down 11 of her 19 shots from the field. Seniya Wilson (17) and Hazel Lord (10) also recorded double-digit scoring efforts.
Both Southwest (N.M.) and LSUA came out shooting in the first quarter. The Mustangs knocked down 50-percent of their shots, while the Generals were 10-for-15 from the field. The lead flipped between benches but a three from Person on the Generals' last possession of the quarter gave them a 24-21 lead at the stoppage.
The Purple and Gold again shot over 50-percent in the second quarter, converting 12 of their 19 chances.
After the Mustangs took a 30-27 lead with 7:47 left in the quarter, their last lead of the game, a three-point play from Goff tied the game. She added a layup on the next possession to give the Generals a 32-30 lead.
A jumper from Lord tied it at 32-32 but a 9-0 run in favor of LSUA put the Generals ahead 41-32. LSUA reached its first 10-point lead of the game on their next possession with a three from Goff. They closed the second quarter leading 54-38.
Midway through the third, the Generals' lead to dipped to six before another 9-0 run for LSUA pushed it back to 15, 69-54.
In the final quarter, Southwest (N.M.) was again able to pull within single digits but a 15-0 run for the Generals sealed the victory. LSUA held the Mustangs scored for over 5:30 in the final quarter.
The Generals head to the RRAC Championship next week with the quarterfinal match ups set following the conclusion of this weekend's games.
