Baseball Upsets No. 10 A&M-Victoria in Series Opener, 7-5

ALEXANDRIA, LA – The Louisiana State University of Alexandria baseball team secured a 7-5 victory over No. 10 Texas A&M University-Victoria.

Michael Sutton (7-3) earned the win after 6.2 innings on the bump. He allowed five runs on four hits and four walks. He struck out a pair. Sutton allowed just one run through the first six innings of play.

The Generals (27-10, 15-4 RRAC) wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning, as Landon Langley reached on a fielder's choice to third base, allowing Cade LaBruyere to score. Later in the inning, Lane Kratzer tripled to left center to bring home Langley and give LSUA an early 2-0 lead.

The Jaguars (27-10, 16-3) cut into the deficit in the fourth inning with an RBI double from Garrett Smith.

LSUA responded in the fifth when Dalton Wilson launched a grand slam to right field, his sixth home run of season, to put the Generals ahead 6-1.

TAMUV mounted a comeback in the seventh inning, scoring four runs to narrow the gap. An RBI double from Purcell opened the comeback bid. Antonio Benitez and Connor Kaiser both worked bases loaded walks. Prior to Kaiser's bases loaded free pass, Ty Boozer scored on a wild pitch. Nash Tamplet forced Smith to fly out to end the inning with the Generals ahead 6-5.

LSUA answered in the bottom half of the inning with a sacrifice fly from Trevor Dooley that brought in Cade LaBruyere and pushed the lead to 7-5.

After a lead-off walk, Tamplet rolled a pair of ground balls, the first a double play, to keep the Jaguars off the board. He held A&M-Victoria at bay in the ninth after a pair of two-out singles from Benitez and Beck Zimmerman, forcing Kaiser to fly out to center, earning his second save of the season.

Games two and three of the series are slated to start at noon on Friday, April 3, at Generals Baseball Field.
