LOYOLA, LA- The Generals clutch up in overtime to get a fantastic 67-66 victory over Loyola University. The Generals now move to 3-4 overall (1-1 in RRAC) after their success in New Orleans.
The Generals started the stronger of the teams, as JD Allen set the tone with an immediate 3-pointer. LSUA had the lead for the majority of the first half, but Loyola constantly stayed within touching distance. Loyola took the lead for the first time with 08:52 remaining in the first half, but the Generals never dropped their heads, and continued to play hard. LSUA were down 30-36 at half time, but head coach, Dimario Jackson inspired his team to come out strong in the second half.
With 08:03 remaining in the second half, Isaiah Howard was able to connect with his reliant jump shot to level the game once again at 48-48. With both teams exchanging buckets for the next seven minutes, it was LSUA that took the lead with 01:06 remaining, thanks to a JD Allen layup. Loyola responded with an emphatic dunk, and we headed to overtime at 58-58.
Overtime is always a tense situation, but Isaiah Howard settled the nerves with an early bucket. Loyola then scored 6 unanswered points, until Howard connected with another two free throws. Loyola then extended their lead to four points, until JD Allen hit a huge three for the Generals. Down by one, with just 00:09 on the clock, JD Allen stole the ball back for LSUA, and made a tough layup to give LSUA a brilliant victory.
JD Allen unsurprisingly led the way for the Generals with 24 points, 11 rebounds & 4 steals. EJ McQuillan had a very impressive 38 minutes with 15 points, 6 rebounds & 2 assists.
Next up for the Generals is a huge RRAC game at the fort. LSUA will take on the University of the Southwest on Thursday at 7:30PM.
