ALEXANDRIA, La. – Adam Sherwood's lone goal lifted the Louisiana State University of Alexandria men's soccer team over Texas A&M-Texarkana, 1-0, in Red River Athletic Conference play.
"A 1-0 win is something I'll take every week in this conference," LSUA Head Coach
Mackenzie Young said. "It's never easy, each opponent is different, and Texarkana never make it easy for us. Every year it's a tough game. It's important to bounce back after the result we had on Thursday. It's good to get the three points at home."
Sherwood drove deep into the attacking third in the 14
th minute. He sent a ball into the box where it rattled off a defender and found its way over the line off the ricochet for a 1-0 lead.
"I just wanted to get down the line, put it in area, and see what happens," Sherwood said. "Lucky for the team it went in. Credit to the lads today, that was a very hard fought win at home."
Two minutes later, Sherwood had another chance. He sent a header goalward but it was stopped by the goalkeeper. The Generals (6-3-2, 4-0-2 RRAC) forced the Eagles' (4-6-2, 2-4-1) to make two more stops in the first half on a shot from Sherwood and a header from
Mackenzie Vincent.
Valeriu Tarlev made three saves on the evening. His first came in the 25
th minute. He then made a pair of saves in quick succession in the 53
rd minute to keep the 1-0 advantage.
Rhys Fuller was credited with a defensive save in the sixth minute, sliding across the six and denying an opportunity from close range.
Sherwood and
Chaz Badeaux forced the Eagles keeper into action in the second half as the Generals searched for an insurance maker. Sherwood's second half chance came in the 70
th minute, while Badeaux's chance came in the 83
rd.
LSUA finished with 13 shots, six on goal. TAMUT totaled eight shots, four on goal.
The Generals are back at home next week as they host the University of Houston-Victoria on Thursday, October 17, at 3:30 PM.
