ALEXANDRIA, La. – A goal in the final 30 seconds from Pablo Dominguez de León gave the Louisiana State University of Alexandria men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Texas A&M-Texarkana in the Red River Athletic Conference Quarterfinal match.
"Standard cup football, isn't it," LSUA Head Coach
Mackenzie Young said. "We go 1-0 up, Texarkana claw their way back in, get a penalty to go 1-1. I told the boys before the game finished, something's going to fall for us. Thankfully with have this guy [Dominguez de León], he's always big, always strong, and finds a way to score to put us over the line. The back line has been phenomenal all year. Rhys [Fuller] and Damo [Kunc] have been colossal at the back. Especially Damo today, he took foul after foul to help us get over the line."
A scoreless first half saw only five total shots. The Generals held the slight upper hand with three. The second half saw a combined 12 shots, eight of which were taken by the Generals.
Adam Sherwood's 51
st minute goal put LSUA ahead 1-0. He took a pass from
Javier Moscardo and beat the keeper.
Looking for an insurance goal,
Chaz Badeaux had his shot stymied in the 66
th minute. Four minutes later, Sherwood rang a shot off the woodwork.
TAMUT got their equalizer in the 81
st minute. The Eagles were awarded a penalty and Diego Picano slotted his chance just inside the post, leveling the score at 1-1.
Valeriu Tarlev was called on in the 86
th minute to keep the game even, turning away a late chance. He made a pair of saves on the evening.
With just 30 seconds left, Sherwood took a free kick and found Dominguez de León in the box. From close range, Dominguez de León lifted a quick shot over the keeper for a 2-1 victory.
