MOBILE, Ala. – The Louisiana State University of Alexandria women's soccer team's (1-3-0) comeback bid came up short against Thomas University (Ga.) (2-2-0), 3-2.
"It's tough to come away from today's game with a defeat," LSUA Head Coach
Mark Hammond said. "I felt like we were the better side for most of the game. However, the moments that we weren't on top we didn't show enough defensively to give us a platform to get the result we wanted."
LSUA finished with 13 shots, six of which were on goal. Thomas totaled 15 shots with seven on frame.
Thomas took the lead in the 30
th minute when Kaitlyn Herb broke through the Generals' line and slipped her shot below the bar.
The Generals generated eight chances in the first half but were kept off the score sheet.
Alexia Bermejo Jo had LSUA's first opportunity with a header off a corner kick from
Micaela Nunes in the 11
th minute.
Elke Tijink forced Emily Lamoreaux into action with a header of her own in the 19
th minute.
Justice Richardson fired four shots in the opening stanza, two of which were on goal.
Meike van Straten made three stops in the first half, keeping out shots from Paige Mortimer, Jarcia Lawrence, and a 40
th minute chance from Herb. The Generals' keeper finished with four saves.
Lamoreaux made a trio of saves for the Night Hawks, taking a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
The Night Hawks were awarded a penalty in the 52
nd minute. Herb was given the duty of taking the kick and buried it for a 2-0 lead.
Looking to bring the score closer, Tijink fired a shot goalwards, but it was kept out by Lamoreaux.
Thomas University stuck again in the 63
rd minute with a goal from Hannah Henriksen for a 3-0 advantage.
A penalty awarded to LSUA in the 67
th minute gave the Generals a bit of late life. Nunes stepped to the spot and didn't miss, pulling LSUA within two. Five minutes later
Sacha Backus scored her first goal of the season, lofting it over the keeper for a 3-2 score line.
Trailing by one, the Generals managed just a pair of chances in the final 18 minutes.
Jessie Eijbersen and
Ellen Meijer each recorded a shot. The final opportunity for LSUA came in the 81
st minute with a corner kick, but the Generals did not manage to generate a scoring chance.
LSUA is back in action on Friday, September 13, as they travel to Copiah-Lincoln Community College for an exhibition at 2:00 PM.
