TEXARKANA, Texas – The No. 21 Louisiana State University of Alexandria (13-1, 6-0 RRAC) softball team swept Texas A&M-Texarkana (11-5, 2-2 RRAC), 9-3 and 3-1, in a Red River Athletic Conference doubleheader.
"I'm extremely proud of the way the girls played today," LSUA Head Coach Trent Partridge said. "In game one, we came out strong, jumped ahead early, and took care of business to secure the win. Game two was one of those 'at 'em' games, where we hit the ball right at defenders. It took until the eighth inning, but we finally found the gaps and pulled off the win. Our first extra inning game of the year brought out the best in our girls and I loved how they handled the pressure."
GAME ONE | LSUA 9, TAMUT 3
Haley Primrose (7-1) went the distance and
Kaetlyn Dunbar drove in a trio of runs in the Generals game one victory.
Primrose allowed three runs on nine hits. She struck out four, one of which was looking.
Dunbar finished 3-for-4, drove in three, and scored once.
Julia Kwakernaak drove in a pair, while
Kilee Moody,
Alyssa Soileau,
Haley Fontenot, and
Madi Baker each drove in one.
The Generals put up a pair of crooked innings, scoring five in the second and four in the fourth.
Texarkana struck first with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the first.
A second inning two-run double from Dunbar opened LSUA's scoring. A single from Soileau made it 3-0, before Fontenot drove in
Molly Sistrunk on a groundout. A single from Moody drove in the inning's final run.
In the fourth, Baker drove in Fontenot with a single. Kwakernaak then drove in Baker and Moody with a single of her own, before Dunbar brought Kwakernaak in with a single.
An RBI single from the Eagles in the bottom of the seventh was all TAMUT managed as Primrose forced a foul out to Baker behind the plate to seal the win.
GAME TWO | LSUA 3, TAMUT 1 (8 INNINGS)
It took extra innings, but LSUA came away with the victory. An RBI double from
Kamille Lightfoot in the eighth drove in the go-ahead run.
Alyssa Soileau threw 5.2 innings in the circle. She allowed just one run on five hits. Primrose (8-1) came on in relief and tossed 2.2 shutout innings to earn the win.
Baker went 4-for-4 at the plate and drove in one. Moody collected a pair of hits. Sistrunk and Fontenot both recorded a hit and scored a run.
LSUA went up 1-0 in the first on an RBI single from Baker. She drove in Fontenot for the lead. In the second, the Eagles pushed across a run on a sacrifice fly.
Both pitching staffs kept the respective offense in check until the Generals broke through in the eighth. Sistrunk led off with a single and Lightfoot, who entered in the sixth as a defensive replacement, laced a double in her only at-bat of the contest for a 2-1 lead. She advanced to third on the play, setting up an RBI ground out from Fontenot for some extra breathing room.
In the bottom half of the inning, Primrose retired the side in order for the win.
