ALEXANDRIA, LA – The No. 15 Louisiana State University of Alexandria softball team used a pair of big late innings to sweep the United States Sports Academy in a doubleheader, 6-0 and 5-4.
"That was a very good team," LSUA Head Coach Trent Partridge said. "They're a first-year program that has not played like a first-year program, they're a very competitive team. We knew they had a really good pitcher and we saw her in both games today. I told our girls, you've seen someone for 13 innings, you need to start making adjustments and we did."
GAME ONE | LSUA 6, USSA 0
The Generals (18-2) scored in three consecutive innings, including a four-run sixth, for the victory.
Haley Primrose (11-2) earned the win with a complete game shutout. She struck out six and allowed just five hits.
Julia Kwakernaak,
Kaetlyn Dunbar, and Kamille Light foot all left the yard.
Haley Fontenot,
Madi Baker, and Kwakernaak each recorded two hits. Kwakernaak and Dunbar drove in a pair each. LSUA finished with 11 hits.
The Purple and Gold opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the fourth from Dunbar to drive in
Hanna Jackson. They added a second run in the fifth on an RBI double from Fontenot.
Three homeruns in the sixth plated four runs for LSUA. Kwakernaak struck first, yanking a pitch down the left field line for a two-run homerun. Dunbar launched a solo shot two batters later. Another two batters, later Lightfoot took a pitch over the wall in center field for a 6-0 lead.
After a lead-off single in the seventh, Primrose retired three straight batters to seal the win.
GAME TWO | LSUA 5, USSA 4
A three-run fifth lifted the Generals to victory in the backend of the doubleheader.
Alyssa Soileau (6-0) earned the win in the circle. She tossed five innings and allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits. Primrose earned her first save of the season in relief. She tossed two innings, allowed one hit, and struck out five hitters.
Kwakernaak went 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Lightfoot went 2-for-3 with a solo homerun. The Generals collected eight hits.
The Generals went up 1-0 in the first when Fontenot scored on a throwing error. The Eagles responded with a run of their own in the second and tacked on two more in the third. With another run in the fourth for a 4-1 lead.
A sacrifice fly from Primrose scored Kwakernaak in the fourth to cut the deficit to two.
In the fifth, Lightfoot hit her second solo homerun on the day before
Kilee Moody doubled home
Madi Baker. Kwakernaak then double home mode to take a 5-4 lead.
Primrose sealed the victory by striking out five of the seven hitters she faced, including the last two hitters in the seventh.
