ALEXANDRIA, LA – The Louisiana State University of Alexandria women's basketball team fell to the University of the Southwest (N.M.), 82-72, in Red River Athletic Conference play.
"Nor our best effort," LSUA Head Coach Billy Perkins said. "The game plan was to keep them off the three-point line and yet we give them 14 from there. We just have to bounce back and get better."
Addison Walker and
Blair Smith led the Generals (6-10, 5-6 RRAC) with 14 points each. Walker shot 5-for-9 from the field and finished 4-for-5 from long range. Smith knocked down three of her five shots and went 8-for-10 at the free throw line. Courtlynn rideau recorded 10 points off the bench. LSUA recorded 34 points in the paint, 13 points off turnovers, and the bench recorded 27 points. The Generals out rebounded USW 45-27
The Mustangs (6-11, 2-9 RRAC) had four players in double digits. Karinna Ortiz led the way with 24 points. Michaela Ray recorded 19, while Alliah Scallion chipped in 12 and Seniya Nelson finished with 10.
Southwest shot 50-perent or better in three quarters and knocked down a total of 14 shots from beyond the arc.
The first five minutes of the game were back and forth. The Generals managed a five-point lead, their largest of the game, with 5:17 left in the quarter. The Mustangs chipped back and took control, leading for 89.7-percent of the game.
Southwest (N.M.) reach its largest lead early in the fourth quarter, a differential of 15, 68-53.
The Generals chipped away, going on a a17-4 run to cut the deficit to just two. Smith recorded six points in the run. Four points came from
McKayla Price, three from
Kelly Norris, and two from both Rideau and
Kaitlyn Blake.
The Mustangs then out scored LSUA 10-2 in the final two minutes of the game.
LSUA is back at home on Saturday, January 17, at 1:00 PM against the University of North Texas at Dallas.
