ALEXANDRIA, La.- The Louisiana State University of Alexandria softball team dropped both games to No. 16 Missouri Baptist in the second half of the four-game series, 8-5 and 6-7.
GAME ONE | MBU 8, LSUA 5
A late rally from the Generals (6-5) fell short as the Spartans (5-3) held on 8-5.
Haley Fontenot went one-for-four with two runs batted in.
Julia Kwakernaak also went two-for-four with one RBI.
Kilee Moody opened the scoring by stealing home for the Generals in the second.
Kwakernaak roped an RBI single to right field, scoring Vitrano to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Generals in the third.
MBU took the fifth inning from the Generals, scoring five runs. Starting with an RBI double to right center from Jacie Dees that brought home Makayla Johnson. This was followed by a single up the middle from Alexi Sanchez to advance the runners and score Dees, making the score 3-2 in favor of the Spartans. A bases-loaded walk allowed Grace McGinnis to score. Emily Wright singled up the middle and allowed Alohilani Bursey to touch home for the Spartans, 5-2.
The Spartans put another run on the scoreboard in the sixth inning, scoring Dees on a double to right-center by Brooklyn Fischer.
In the seventh, Camryn Kessler crushed a home run that earned her two RBI by scoring Allison Leigraf, 8-2.
Alyssa Soileau started the comeback for the Generals in the seventh with a double to right field that scored
Hayden Cary. Fontenot later tripled to right-center, driving in Soileau and
Kamille Lightfoot, cutting the deficit to 8-5, but the comeback bid ended there.
Bailey (4-1) took the loss. She recorded three strikeouts and four earned runs in the seven-inning game.
GAME TWO | MBU 7, LSUA 6
A back-and-forth battle for the second game of the day went in favor of the Spartans as the Generals fell 7-6 despite a late push.
Kwakernaak, Bailey, and
Kaetlyn Dunbar went two-for-four. Dunbar had two RBI, and Kwakernaak had one.
The Generals were first to the scoreboard fon a sacrifice bunt from Fontenot to score
Sophia Romero in the third inning. Later in the inning, Dunbar launched a two-run home run to making it 3-0 Generals.
The Spartans got one back in the fourth with a single to the left center from Miranda Ladson that drove in Fischer.
The Generals responded in the second half of the inning when
Rylie Jeau Theriot dropped down a sacrifice bunt to allow Bailey to cross home plate to make the score 4-1.
Missouri Baptist made their comeback in the fifth inning, tying the game at 4-4. Fischer doubled to center field and brought around Johnson and Kelsie Holtmeyer. This was followed by a single to the right center by Ladson to score Madison Leckrone to tie the game.
Romero stole third on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fifth and came home to put the Generals back in the lead.
Leigraf started the sixth with a homerun. Fischer drew a bases-loaded walk to score Kessler, 6-5 in favor of the Spartans. A sacrifice from Sanchez allowed Kendall Zimmer to touch home and extend the lead for the Spartans.
In a last-ditch effort, Kwakernaak smashed a solo homerun in the final frame, but the Generals' comeback was stymied as the Spartans secured the 7-6 victory.
Soileau (0-2) was charged with the loss. She struck out three and allowed six earned runs.
