ALEXANDRIA, LA – The No. 24 Louisiana State University of Alexandria softball team hit four home runs en route to a pair of wins over No. 7 Our Lady of the Lake University, 10-2 and 6-1.
GAME ONE | LSUA 10, OLLU 2
Kaetlyn Dunbar and
Haley Fontenot went deep in the series opener as
Lainee Bailey collected the win.
Bailey tossed three innings and allowed two runs on one hit and four walks. She struck out a pair.
Kilee Moody and Fontenot both recorded a pair of hits. Dunbar and Fontenot drove in three runs each. LSUA (23-12, 15-2 RRAC) totaled nine hits.
The Generals took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Moody scored on a two-out RBI double from Fontenot. The Saints (27-6, 16-2 RRAC) responded immediately with a solo home run from Novalee Gloria in the second inning on the eighth pitch of the at-bat.
In the Generals' half of the second, they exploded for seven runs.
Alyssa Soileau led off with a single up the middle.
Caitlyn Riche followed and laid down a bunt single. Soileau advanced to second and took third as it was left unattended by the Saints. A throw from across the diamond at first failed to find its target, allowing Soileau to score and Riche to reach third. Howell then singled to left and drove in Riche for a 3-1 lead.
Two batters later, a double from Moody brought around
Jaycie O'Conner - who ran for Howell.
Sophia Romero followed with a single to left, driving in Moody, and taking second on the throw into the plate. Romero's single changed Valeria Vielma (8-2) from the game. She was lifted for Annika Litterio who walked Fontenot as the first hitter she faced. With runners on first and second, Dunbar crushed a 1-1 offering over the center field wall for an 8-1 lead.
A sacrifice fly from Marisa Rosales in the top of the third made it 8-2.
After being held scoreless in the third, the Generals scored two in the fourth on one swing of the bat. Fontenot received the green light on a 3-0 pitch and laced a line drive over the left center fence for a 10-2 lead.
Cate Nettles and
Rylee Guillot each went an inning of scoreless relief.
GAME TWO | LSUA 6, OLLU 1
Two more home runs, this time from Fontenot and Howell, and a complete game from Bailey completed the doubleheader sweep.
Bailey allowed just one run on four hits and two walks. She struck out two. Fontenot and Howell both collected three runs batted in.
The Saints found the scoreboard first. An RBI groundout from Tania Rodriguez allowed Arianna Alejandro to score.
LSUA responded in their half of the opening inning. With Moody on second, Fontenot laced a line drive toward the left center gap. Ranging over from left, Rosales nearly tracked down the liner but it eluded her and rolled to the wall as Fontenot raced around the bases. Fontenot was waved home by third base coach Brannin Hagan at third, diving head first into home for an inside the park home run and a 2-1 lead.
In the fourth, Dunbar scored on a fielder's choice by beating out a throw to the plate. An inning later, an RBI ground out from Fontenot drove in
Shelby Vitrano, who reached on a pinch hit double down the left field line.
The Generals added two more thanks to light tower power from Howell. She took a 3-2 pitch from Vielma and rang it off the light post behind the wall in left center field.
Our Lady of the Lake was sent down in order in three innings. The Generals rolled a 4-6-3 double play to seal the victory.
