ALEXANDRIA, LA – The Louisiana State University of Alexandria baseball team took down No. 19 Louisiana Christian University, 7-5, in the opening game of their Red River Rivalry series.
Michael Sutton (8-3) went five innings for the Generals (29-11, 17-5 RRAC) to earn the win. He allowed three earned runs, on seven hits, and struck out two.
Colin Ardoin came on in relief and went four shutout innings and allowed just two hits to earn his second save of the season. He struck out three, all coming in the eighth and ninth innings.
Brandon Carter (7-2) was charged with the loss. He allowed six runs, just three earned, on two hits. He walked three and hit one batter, while striking out six.
Back-to-back doubles in the top of the second gave the Wildcats (31-8, 16-6 RRAC) a 2-0 lead. Harrison Waxley pulled a ball down the third base line to put runners on second and third. Gavin Vordick followed with his own double down the left field line, driving in both Waxley and Zephaniah Singleton.
After a quiet third inning, Chris Kelley made it 3-0 Wildcats with a solo home run to left field.
Louisiana Christian scored two more in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead. A passed ball allowed Caleb Brown to score before Braden Trull singled up the middle to drive in Braden McLin.
The Generals finally found the scoreboard in their half of the fifth.
Evan Rohlfs-Schadel worked a bases loaded walk for LSUA's first run.
Lane Patin followed with a sacrifice fly to left. Cade LaBruyere became the third consecutive hitter to drive in a run, singling through the right side to plate
Cayden McCollough.
A costly double-error allowed two more runs to score for LSUA.
Dalton Wilson reached on a fielding error, which drove in
Shae Thibodeaux before a second error on the same play allowed LaBruyere to score and give the Generals a 6-5 lead.
An inning later,
Lane Patin gave the Generals an insurance run, driving in
Cameren Parks with an RBI single to left.
After stranding two runners in the top of the sixth in his first inning of work, Ardoin retired the side in order in each of the next three innings. In the eighth inning, he struck out the first two hitters before striking out the game's final hitter to seal the save.
LSUA hosts a doubleheader against No. 19 LCU on Saturday, April 11, starting at noon at the Generals Baseball Field.
