MARSHALL, Texas – A pair of second half goals lifted the (RV) Louisiana State University of Alexandria men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Wiley University (TX).
"Very gutsy performance from the boys in extremely hard conditions," LSUA Head Coach
Mackenzie Young said. "We put ourselves in a bind early on through our own error, but I'm pleased with how the lads reacted and handled adversity today to come away with a win. Onto the next one at home on Saturday."
Just over eight minutes into the game the Wildcats gained an edge. Josh Hunte blocked a pass from the Generals' keeper and buried his chance for a 1-0 lead.
LSUA's first chance came of the boot of O'Donnell nine minutes later. Joaquin Lesperguer was called into action and made his first save of the contest.
A corner from O'Donnell 13 minutes later generated a headed effort from
Pablo Novoa Martin but he was rebuffed by Lsperguer.
The Generals held Wiley to just two shots in the first 45.
Five minutes into the second half,
Shay Meagher was denied by Lesperguer but the Generals equalized two minutes later.
Mario Fairweather sent an aerial cross into the 18 and
Lucas O'Donnell buried a close-range chance to level the game, 1-1, in the 53
rd minute.
It wasn't until the 71
st minute that either side put a shot on goal following O'Donnell's equalizer. A corner from O'Donnell forced Lesperguer into action once more.
Genis Alcaide Armengol put the Generals ahead with his first goal of the season in the 78
th. He redirected a ball from
Federico Gilardi past the keeper for a 2-1 advantage.
The Wildcats' final chance came in the 83
rd minute. Stephen Gaskin fired a shot goalward and it was turned aside by
Jayden Peglar to preserve the lead.
LSUA is back at home on Saturday, September 12, to host Oklahoma City University at 3:30 PM.
