HATTIESBURG, MS – The Louisiana State University of Alexandria women's soccer team battled No. 10 William Carey University to a 1-0 loss.
"A game of two different philosophies," LSUA Head Coach
Mark Hammond said. "I think we're walking away thinking what could have been, however I cannot fault a single person in our squad tonight. I think we absorbed a lot of pressure and had to defend for our lives at times but we also had the two best chances to score. Tonight, I believe we got better and we'll use this performance for the rest of the regular season."
It took nearly 80 minutes to break the 0-0 deadlock. William Carey's (2-1-1) Paloma Parks headed home a ball from Avery Rogers for the contest's only goal.
The Crusaders out shot the Generals (2-3-0) 18-6, but both squads put a third of their chances on goal.
Meike van Straten made five saves in net for LSUA. She made her first save in the 28
th minute, denying Raquel Diaz.
Sara Escribano Garcia-Miguel tested Alicia Garwood in the 35
th minute but the Crusaders' keeper turned her away to keep the game scoreless.
Sacha Backus registered the first chance on goal in the second half, testing Garwood in the 47
th minute. The Crusaders' keeper came up with the stop again to prevent an early second half goal. Luana Falconeri forced van Straten back into action in the 53
rd with the Generals' netminder denying her effort and keeping the score level.
In the 59
th minute, van Straten stymied a chance from Raquel Batalla Royo. Nearly 12 minutes later, she turned away a pair of chances from Diaz and Falconeri.
The Crusaders broke the deadlock in the 78
th minute with Paris' goal.
A late headed effort in the 90
th minute from
Emma Kate Rogers went high, closing the Generals' chances at levelling the score.
LUSA travels to Wiley College on Thursday, September 10, for a 1:00 PM kick-off.
