ALEXANDRIA, La. – Sacha Backus' last second game equalized the Louisiana State University of Alexandria women's soccer match, 3-3, against Texas A&M-Texarkana to force a draw.
"We create our own problems and going 2-0 down to a good side, it's always going to be a battle," LSUA Head Coach
Mark Hammond said. "The girls did tremdnously well to get back into the game, not just once but we had to do it twice. We will be disappointed with the draw, but happy we got something out of it because we deserved to get something out of it with our performance. We need to look at ourselves and focus on the areas we need to improve in to keep moving forward with the rest of the season."
Backus picked up a loose ball after the Eagles' (5-4-2, 4-1-2 RRAC) keeper left her line to knock away a free kick. Off the carom, Backus finished her chance with just 15 seconds left on the clock.
The Generals (5-4-2, 4-1-2 RRAC) fell behind 2-0 on a pair of TAMUT goals from Desiree Narvaez and Emma Contreras in the 16
th and 18
th minutes.
Alexia Bermejo Jo cut the deficit in half in the 22
nd minute. Elke Tijiink slipped a pass to Bermejo Jo who buried her fifth goal of the season.
It wasn't until the 84
rd minute when the Generals levelled the score for the first time.
Micaela Nunes brought the game even with her seventh goal of the year, but just over a minute later, Narvaez struck again for the Eagles for a 3-2 lead.
Backus' last-minute goal was the second equalizer of the afternoon for LSUA.
Victoria Weber made three saves, including one in the 82
nd minute just prior to Nunes' goal.
LSUA finished with 15 shots, 11 of which were on goal. TAMUT totaled 14 shots, six on frame.
The Generals are back at home next week to take on the University of Houston-Victoria on Thursday, October 17, at 1:00 PM.
