ALEXANDRIA, La. – The Louisiana State University of Alexandria women's soccer team (1-1-0) fell to the University of Science and Arts (Okla.) (2-0-0), 2-0.
"We're just trying to learn about ourselves right now," LSUA Head Coach
Mark Hammond said. "We are still trying to progress. All credit to Science and Arts, they were the better team on the day."
The Drovers finished with 22 shots and held the Generals to four. LSUA goalkeeper
Avery Wright made 10 saves.
Wright was pressed into action early, styming a shot from Ilse de Jong in the fourth minute. She turned aside a chance from Cloey Prachyl two minutes later. In the opening 15 minutes the Drovers compiled seven shots.
Sacha Backus had the first opportunity for the Generals. Her shot in the fifth minute carried right of the post. In the 23
rd minute,
Ksenija Pavlovic forced USAO's keeper, Ashlyn Longerg, into action in order to keep the score at 0-0.
On the counterattack, Wright was called on again. She parried another chance from de Jong. In the 28
th, Wright turned aside a chance from Dagbjort Gudmundsdottir.
The Drovers struck in the 32
nd minute. Mabel Cremers found Daniela Salinas, who slipped her shot past the keeper.
USAO led 1-0 after 45 minutes of play. Salinas searched for her second marker but was foiled by Wright in the 48
th minute. Wright thwarted a chance from Alexis Mendez in the 62
nd minute and made a pair of stops on de Jong in the 7snd and 73
rd minutes.
The insurance goal came in the 79
th minute. A corner kick from the Drovers sent the ball towards the top of the 18 for Andria Harris. She released a shot goalward where Clara Rodriguez got her boot on it for a redirection and 2-0 lead.
Pavlovic and
Shealbie Whatley had the Generals' shots in the second half.
"We just need to minimize our own headaches," Hammond added. "When you play against good sides, one or two minor details can make the difference and we saw that today.
