Women's Soccer Takes Down Mustangs, 3-1

ALEXANDRIA, La. – Three unanswered goals lifted the Louisiana State University of Alexandria women's soccer team over the University of the Southwest (N.M.), 3-1.

"It was important for us to get the win," LSUA Head Coach Mark Hammond said. "We started well and had a little dip in the first half but dominated in the second half. The girls worked hard for it and the performance today was better as we inch towards being the best version of ourselves."

The Mustangs (3-3-1, 1-3-0 RRAC) opened the scoring in the 25th minute with a goal from Jadyn Duran.

LSUA (3-3-1, 2-0-1 RRAC) had early chances from Alexia Bermejo Jo and Sofia Jimeno Nogue, but they were kept out by the Mustangs' keeper. Sacha Backus was denied in the 36th minute, but it was not her last chance.

With just seven seconds left in the first half, Backus finished her opportunity, levelling the game at 1-1. Micaela Nunes recorded the assist.

In the 54th minute, Jimeno Nogue was called to the penalty spot. She converted for her third goal of the season, sending her shot off the inside of the post and in. The Generals received another penalty in the 67th minute, this time sending Nunes to take the kick. She buried her chance, giving the Generals a 3-1 lead.

Jimeno Nogue nearly added a second goal in the 71st minute, heading a chance goalward but a Mustangs' defender kept it from crossing the line. She had another penalty opportunity in the 87th, but sent it off the post. The Generals' final chance came in the 89th minute when Ksenija Pavlovic was stymied by Kristina Simpson.

LSUA is back in action on Thursday, October 3, as they travel to Texas College for another RRAC match.
