Bermejo Scores Twice as Generals Tame Jaguars, 2-1

SAN ANTONIO, TX – Alexia Bermejo Jo's two goals lifted the Louisiana State University of Alexandria women's soccer team over Texas A&M-San Antonio, 2-1.

Bermejo Jo now has six goals on the season for the Generals (4-5-0, 3-1-0 RRAC), tying her for the team lead.

"Very happy with the result today," LSUA Head Coach Mark Hammond said. "We needed a reaction as a group and from some individuals and we got that in abundance to day. We still have a lot of work to do but doay was a good day. We had some great performances from Justice, Sacha, and Ariana. Special shoutout to Alexia for being a difference maker besiders her two goals, she put the team on her back with her work off the ball."

LSUA held the Jaguars (2-7-1, 1-3-0 RRAC) shotless in the second half and allowed just three shots all game. The Purple and Gold registered 12 shots, eight of which were on goal.

Meike van Straten made one save and earned her third win of the season in goal.

The Jaguars took the lead midway through the first half with a goal from Samara Lopez. The Generals had a pair of chances from Sacha Backus shortly after Lopez's goal but both were turned aside by Isabella Villarreal.

Bermejo's equalizer came in the 39th minute. Working up the left wing, the Generals received a throw-in. Justice Richardson's throw was collected by Bermejo who ripped a shot past Villarreal to level the game.

Her second goal came just under 10 minutes later and just over three minutes into the second half. Ariana Lowenstein connected with Backus, who headed a chance off the crossbar. Bermejo buried the rebound for the lead and the Generals never looked back.

The Generals played shutdown defensively in the second half, while maintaining pressure in the offensive third. Lowenstein, Backus, and Taylor Carty all recorded shots over final 35 minutes of play.

"We can be proud of our results," Hammond added. "Conceding against the run of play is tough but we regained our momentum and I felt we were more than deserving winners today."

LSUA is back at home next week against Jarvis Christian and Texas A&M-Texarkana. The Generals take on Jarvis Christian on Thursday, October 9, at 1:00 PM from the Generals Soccer Field.
